This post is part of a series titled, “A-B-Cs – What It’s Really Like”. Each week a new letter and its word will be revealed. Each word’s explanation will illustrate significant personal meaning, application and ultimately demonstrate, What It’s Really Like… Back in 1998 MTV debuted the reality TV show Real World/Road Rules Challenge – better known as simply, “The Challenge”. In reflection of my current life I have found that much my own reality is impacted by challenges from the real world and the rules of the road. *** BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS: 4:30AM – the alarm rings out. The real world will begin after a few open handed smacks of the snooze button. Is it mommy or daddy’s turn to take the boys to school? Whoever’s turn it is has the first shower. I can’t remember what she said last night. Was it me or her? She’s not moving. Shit, I think it’s my day. Yep, it is. OK I’m up. Ouch! How many times am I going to kick that laundry basket before somebody moves it? Where is the light? What’s the difference? I can’t see anything anyways. Toothbrush. Man, the lights are bright. I’ll try to rub my eyes a few times to clear my eyesight. Whoa, wish I could not see again. You look like crap. When is the last time you worked out? Ugh, I guess I’ll weigh myself. That might motivate me to run tonight after work. Please don’t be high. WOW. How is that possible? I feel 25 pounds heavier than that. I still feel like crap, though. Lucky. Probably still won’t run tonight, anyway. Pounding sinus headache. Not a sip of alcohol last night and I feel like I’ve pulled an all-night bender and just stopped drinking an hour ago. Time for the shower. Don’t forget to turn the light on in Little room before you get into the shower. It is taking a lot longer for him to get out of bed lately. Maybe today I can get him dressed on his own without World War III breaking out. Doubt it. What the hell do I wear today? This closet selection is so sad. God, I hate ironing my pants. Why don’t I do this the night before? Oh, Kathy’s up. I’m not going to say anything. She’s not a morning person. That’s ok. I feel like my head is going to explode and I don’t feel like talking either. Let’s see if Little B is up while I wait for the iron to warm up. Nope. He won’t even move. Why can’t he sleep this hard EARLIER in the night? I’ll shake him to get things going. “Hey, buddy. Time to wake up. Rise and shine!” “No, no, nonono, GO AWAY DADDY. Leave me ALONE!” When did my toddler turn into a teenager? “Five minute warning and we are going to get dressed.” “No, no, NOOOOOOOO!” I’m so glad he hasn’t learned any cuss words. I half expect him to use a few one of these mornings. OK, I am dressed. Now let’s get him dressed. This has to be the worst part of the day. What is my strategy? He’s been terrible to wake and get ready lately. Sneak attack? No, that makes things worse. I can’t bribe him this early. Let him make the choice. “Who do you want to get you dressed – Mommy or Daddy?” Classic line. He usually picks the opposite. “Noooooo! I DON’T KNOW” That didn’t work. Now what? Have to try the bribe. “If you get up and get ready without crying we can go get donuts on Friday morning before school. Do you want donuts?” “I don’t want donuts. I don’t want to go to school. Leave me alone, Daddy!” This is turning into a hostage negotiation. *15 minutes pass* I can’t take this anymore. I am going to start yelling. Now I’m yelling louder. OK, now I am threatening to spank him. Should I spank him? He just woke up. That’s really not right. He is really pissing me off today. I’m going to be late. Enough is enough. Well, that didn’t work. He’s bawling now. Kathy just walked in. THANK GOD. He has everything but his socks on now. Good enough. She can brush his teeth and comb his hair. I’m out of here. I am starving. It’s 6:25. SERIOUSLY?! I have not even eaten yet. Why are there no clean spoons? Cereal sucks when you ate the same exact meal as a snack before going to bed. ARRRGHHHH! I just remembered! I have to pack my lunch. Unreal. I have no time for this. I hear Little B coming down the stairs. How did she brush his teeth so fast? No wait, he’s at the top of the stairs refusing to come down. Awesome. He hasn’t eaten yet either. Let’s try the line again. “What do you want for breakfast? Mommy or Daddy’s cereal?” “I don’t want breakfast! I want NUFFING!” I look at the clock. It is 6:29. Zero hour is 6:30. The commute is only 15 miles, but traffic is horrific. If I don’t leave before 6:30 I won’t make it to work until after 8:00. Screw it. Leftovers. Where is the ice pack for my lunch? Of course I forgot to put it back in the freezer yesterday. Good thing we have a backup. Cute, real cute. The backup ice packs are so fat that the Tupperware doesn’t fit in my lunch bag. Guess I’ll have to make a sandwich after all. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR BREAKFAST?” “NUFFING!” I’m pouring a bowl, I don’t care. At least I can say that I tried. “Here’s your cereal” “I DON’T WANT IT” “OK, Daddy is going to eat it or throw it away” “NONONO!” (crying ensues) “I want to eat it!!!” “Sit down at your little table and eat it then.” “Ok… I WANT A BIG SPOON! I DON’T WIKE THE GREEN BOWL! I WANT THE BLUE BOWL!!!!” You’ve got to be freaking kidding me. You know what, I am not even going to fight him today. Where is that damn blue bowl? Dirty in the dishwasher. Figures. Well that’s out the window. “EAT IT OR IT GETS THROWN AWAY!” (Sobbing ensues) What time is it now? 6:34. I can still make decent time if I am in my truck by 6:45. COFFEE. This can’t be happening. THERE IS NO COFFEE. I have no time to make coffee. “Welp, there is no coffee!!!” “I’m so sorry Brody, I can’t do everything around here!” Oops. That wasn’t for her to hear. She did get Little B and Baby K ready without my help. Doesn’t matter anymore. I explode. I light into everything in the kitchen. Little B, Kathy, the freezer, coffee maker. I’ll even cuss out my lunch bag while I’m at it. Shut up and get out before you ruin everyone’s day. Truck keys. I’ve got to get out of here. I’m going to be late. I feel horrible for not helping Kathy. She won’t want my help now because I yelled back at her. Why do I do that? *15 minutes pass* We are all loaded up. Deep breath. We made it. Start the truck, garage door down, aaaand adjust radio. No Country this morning. I need to calm down. Where is the Jazz station? There that is better. Silence. “Daddy, I hungie (hungry)”. *** For me, reality comes in one giant cycle commencing and culminating with two massive countdowns for launching (departing the house) and landing (bedtime). The road rules quality time spent with my children during three hour commutes in which I stare at the rearview mirror into the backs of their little eyelids after they have passed out from a long day at school. The reality of “R” is a challenge that each of us faces every day. Rise, retain, remain, retire. Repeat.

Choices Entitlements Decision Making Distractions Freestyle On Demand This and That This and This Too Many Choices

Over the last year my wife and I have attempted to emphasize the importance of making good choices with our toddler. It has been an extremely daunting task to not only teach him what a choice is, but help guide him toward decision making that we find acceptable. We both feel that the quickest way for him to learn is to have a high level of autonomy over minor situations so that he can practice the skill while we still make most of the major decisions for him controlling and modeling proper behavior. So far we have seen vast improvements in his understanding of choice, but like most children this age it is a test of wills between parent and child. So much of our lives are driven by choices. We make thousands of them each day. Even as an adult I find myself struggling with the ability to choose especially in a culture that now seems to demand entitlements of individualization and variety. Our culture seems to have shifted from a nation who wants this and that to a nation of this and this. Personalizing options are meant to help one feel in control, satisfied and fulfilled. These popular trends produce high pressure to keep up with demand. How then, can I find the freedom to choose to feel so restricting? I get a restrictive, suffocating feeling when I am at Zaxby’s in front of a Coke Freestyle machine. If you have never seen one of these it is a touch-screen automated fountain machine that boasts over 100+ Coca-Cola brand selections. During each visit, in what feels like an excruciating eternity, I will eventually settle on a drink selection after flipping through the entire catalogue several times. This greatly frustrates my accompanying dining party as I am either made fun relentlessly of or told to get out of the way. This may seem funny to you that such an inconsequential decision would be so difficult to make, but for me taking a leap toward the perfect selection from a huge assortment is virtually paralyzing. Too many choices are distracting. Our good choices routine with our son backfires when we allow him to choose an episode of one of his favorite television shows to watch before going to bed. In addition to his decision making development he has also (finally) developed a diverse TV palette beyond Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He has learned the evil powers of the TV remote and the on-demand capabilities of the DVR. His frequent back-and-forth waffling on what to watch often leads to an unwanted outburst that inevitably delays bedtime. Much like his father in standing front of the Coke Freestyle machine, my son is distracted by too many choices. Some of the biggest fights between my wife and I have not been over money, household chores or child care responsibilities. A number of these conflicts have been over where to go to dinner/get take-out or what movie we want to watch on Netflix. It’s not every day we eat out or take a few hours to relax in front of the TV. We both try way too hard to choose the perfect selection to make it worth our while. Flipping through local restaurants on Google Maps and movies on the Netflix genre guide are eerily similar to the previous dilemma I described with the Zaxby’s Coke machine. Too many choices! I remember as a kid before satellite television we got the four local major network stations (six channels on a clear weather day!) from our roof-top antenna. Show listings were published in a paper TV Guide that came out weekly in the Sunday newspaper. If you missed an episode of your favorite sitcom you would not be able to watch it until it re-aired during the show’s off-season. In addition, growing up in a small town we had very little selection when it came to dining out. The nearest trendy eateries were a 30 mile drive away. My father was never convinced any meal was worth that far of a drive. Back then food and entertainment selections were made easy due to a lack of choice. Ahh, the good old days. The next time you become frozen in the cereal aisle at the supermarket or break into a cold sweat when flipping through your satellite radio just remember that large selections are intended to make choices easier, not harder. I will try to keep telling myself that the next time I am in front of the Coke Freestyle machine…and I will continue to stand their motionless.

Have you ever felt like you were doing something just to be doing it but you really didn’t know “why” you were doing it? Or… have you ever felt as if you had this grand vision which caused you to work yourself to the bone but the end result only left you feeling exhausted, deprived, and unfulfilled? One day I was door to door marketing for my Rejuve-N-Luv Body Scrubs when I came across a sweet lady who really supported my vision and mission. Not only did she invest in my body scrubs but she also gave me a purple wooden paddle that quotes, “Do Small Things With Great Love”. As my heart overflowed with warmth and my eyes filled with tears, it was a simple reminder that the greatest gifts come in small packages and are wrapped with love. The funny thing is, before ever meeting this kind woman, I have always told customers that my Rejuve-N-Luv Body Scrubs were handcrafted from the heart with love. Even though it is something so small, I pour my heart into the creation of each product; and although I have a grand vision for empowering moms, I will not let my final destination consume “me” or the greater purpose behind “why” I do what I do. In the beginning of my journey I got caught in all of the hype of trying to be a successful a mompreneur and life coach which caused my focus to be misaligned with my what my heart desired and the greater purpose that I was serving. See, what often happens is that our eyes start to get bigger than the view in front of us and then we easily get distracted, side tracked, and rerouted all because we lose touch with where our heart and true desires were leading us. Be intentional! Whatever dream, goal, or vision that you are setting out to achieve, know that it does not have to have be monstrous, glamorous, or shiny in order for it to light up the world. As long as you follow your heart, act intentionally, and execute it with great love, no matter how small or how big the deed is, your light will shine… and it will shine BRIGHT! But most importantly, remember that a woman who listens to her heart and walks purposefully towards her dreams will attract the divine opportunities and people with her light. So the next time that you are “going”, ask yourself, 1) what is the greater purpose that I am serving and 2) am I following my heart and acting with love. .

If you can, think back to your younger years, maybe when you were grade school age, or even younger if you can. What were you like? Did you have fears and worries and doubts or anxiety?? Kids can be cruel. Let’s face it, adults can be cruel too. The world isn’t by any means a perfect place, it’s far from it. But as a parent, you want to try to instill good morals and selflessness and sensitivity. You want your child to be kind to others, to not make fun of another kid because of their clothes, toys, or choices even. Often times we hear about kids getting bullied in school or kids committing suicide because they had no friends, nobody who understood them or cared enough to try to get to know them. It’s sad! I have an almost 3 year old daughter and she loves princesses, but she also loves getting dirty, and sweaty and running around covered in filth and food. She almost always has stains on her clothes because she likes to get into things, she likes to ‘help’ her daddy fix things (which usually ends up with her covered in cuts, scrapes, and bruises). And you know what?! I’m fine with that. I’m okay with the way she is. She’s happy, outgoing, lovable, kind-hearted, sweet, selfless, hysterical, and most of all…she’s my daughter. …she likes to ‘help’ her daddy fix things (which usually ends up with her covered in cuts, scrapes, and bruises). And you know what?! I’m fine with that. I’m okay with the way she is. Normally when we take her places, within 5 minutes she is covered in sweat, her face is beat red, and her clothes are barely hanging onto her body. She’s amazing and adventurous! I love the life in her eyes and the gentleness of her soul. To me, she’s perfect. But there are still those people that make comments. I have had people refer to her as a ‘hobo’ because of how she’s dressed. They’ve said she looks like she belongs ‘in a trailer park’ because she was outside, in just a diaper, and someone told her she was a ‘hot mess’ because she was sweaty and wearing raggedy, dirty play clothes from Wal-Mart that were covered in food of some sort! In what world do people think it’s alright to speak to a not even 3 year old like that, let alone a little girl?! Self esteem can be broken so easily. It really angers me and even breaks my heart to know that one day I’m going to have to answer some pretty tough questions from her and I pray to God that I can be strong enough to be honest with her and at the same time sensitive to the subject at hand. I pray that we will raise her right and she will be strong enough on her own to stand on her own two feet and know that people sometimes say hurtful things that aren’t true. They’ve said she looks like she belongs ‘in a trailer park’ because she was outside, in just a diaper, and someone told her she was a ‘hot mess’ because she was sweaty and wearing raggedy, dirty play clothes from Wal-Mart… I, of course, do not know what the future holds, but I pray for the future of ALL of our children. That they be kind and wise in their words and actions and that their parents teach them the difference between right and wrong. And parents, even though a child may not fit into your perfect mold that you have set, please also be kind with your words and actions and consider that child’s feelings before saying such hurtful things. Just let kids be kids!! It’s okay!!

Recently I found this amazing product and I just have to share it with everyone I know!! Being only twenty years old, I still try my hardest to combat any signs of aging before it even has time to hit me! Like any other women, (at least I think), we will do anything to stay looking as youthful as we can for as long as we can! While some people like to spend more money on procedures to reverse the aging process by using Botox and other very expensive treatments, others like to fight it by not having to spending as much but while still achieving great results! In my opinion, I do typically think that the more you spend (and this goes for everything), the more you get out of some thing!! But, with that being said… Dundundun! The Queen Bee of all face creams: Beenigma! I have been absolutely loving this stuff! And if you’re wondering about the whole “bee” thing… Well, this all-in-one face cream actually is derived from actual bee VENOM. Yup, that’s right, venom! Kind of scary when you first think about it, but when you actually learn what it’s doing to your skin and when you see the results, it really is the bees knees. I bet you’re wondering how bee venom has anything to do with fighting wrinkles and making you look more youthful, so I’m here to tell you what I’ve learned about it! So basically just think of it as getting tiny bee stings all over your face (just what every one wants, right? haha!), but really, everyone’s been stung by a bee before, and what happens? Your skin swells up! That’s exactly what the venom in the cream does to your skin! Your skin reacts as if you’ve been stung. You’re probably thinking “Ouch! I am not rubbing that stuff all over my face!!”, but actually, inflammation is not a side effect and it does not feel like a bee sting, maybe just some tingling as first! The result? Any fine lines are instantly reduced, filled in and skin is plumped, has better elasticity, and has a more smoothed appearance and feel to it! Plus, the more you use it, the more effect you’re going to get! I’ve only been using this product for a few weeks, but already see awesome results! Of course this products is not suitable for any one with a known bee allergy, because that’s just pretty self explanatory. Like I said before, being only twenty, I may not have as many signs of aging as others, but we all want to look our best and feel our best and I think the first step to that is preventing the things that make us feel not so glamorous. The cream is also made with ingredients like Manuka Honey and Shea Butter, which are both very soothing. Manuka Honey has a very high grade of antibacterial factors, which make it great for acne and keeping your face clear, defiantly being a big plus! Packed full of amino acids, minerals and vitamins, Manuka Honey has much more healing power and anti-aging capabilities compared to normal honey! Overall, it’s just an awesome product, I totally recommend it any one looking for a new skin cream! As for my skin care routine, I use Beenigma in the morning after I wash my face and at night after I have used my Clarosonic brush to get my makeup and gunk from the day off! Very little goes a long way too, so don’t be alarmed by the size of the container! Oh! And as for the price, not being the cheapest at $130 a container, it gets the job done, and in my opinion it is TOTALLY worth every cent as every last drop of this product is gold. Beauty is pain, well not in all cases, but pain can come from too-high price-tags. Haha!

My Friend, Kymm McLean, is a makeup artist who I work alongside with in the wedding industry and she posted a status that I felt cleared up a lot of questions I’ve always had on makeup, the costs of it, and the chemicals in the makeup, so I thought I would share it with you… Enjoy! Kymm says: I was asked today if you can accomplish a great makeup face with drugstore brands vs. department store brands. So here we go, I have alot to say about this subject so I’ll keep it as brief as possible. When you purchase a drugstore brand, such as Loreal, you are paying for the ingredients, manufacturing, shipping, stocking and advertising. When your purchase department/boutique store brands such as Mac, you are paying for the same, but also for staffing (including hourly rates that average $20-30 an hour, health insurance benefits, training), extensive marketing campaigns, the gratis or “free” makeup that employees are given, testers, returns, etc. The profit margin to provide these additional costs is in the MILLIONS. I used to work for Mac, I saw the product manufacturing invoice once, the eye shadows were $.50 to produce, they retail for $16. So, to answer that question, are the ingredients of a higher quality? No. They are typically the same, if you don’t believe me, compare labels. However, you can purchase a Loreal lipstick and hope for the best. Or you can go to a Mac counter, sit down, have an artist help you chose the colors best for you, try them on and return if it doesn’t work. Is it worth the additional cost? That’s a personal decision you have to make. Both brands are full of carcinogenics, parabens, dyes, preservatives, and other ingredients that contribute to bio body burden. Are there brands that don’t use these ingredients? Absolutely, and you can find many of them at the drugstore or health food grocery store. So, final word. If you simply love a department store makeup item, by all means purchase it. Just be aware that it’s not BETTER, it just provides an EXPERIENCE you can’t get at a drugstore : )

What is blogging REALLY like? An addiction. I mean, it’s a “good” kind of addiction… but it still takes over your life. You’re out for a walk and see a cute boutique… Potential blog post? That cupcake you treated yourself to after lunch was super tasty… Blog post! A leaf falls off of a tree and lands softly on the sidewalk… YES, there is definitely a blog post in there somewhere because why are leaves falling off trees in the end of May? Time to get educated. Everything you see and do is automatically filtered through a blogger mindset – can this be revamped to go on the blog? If you thought you were social media-addicted before, just wait ’til you start a blog that you want the online community to notice. Hello, shameless self-promotion. You’ll be posting more than you ever thought you would post and doing a ridiculous amount of networking and taking sooooo many pictures because who ever thought you would have to take 100 pictures before you got that angle that’s just PERFECT? And sometimes it’s 1000 but, hey, #DoItForTheBlog. As a blogger, my head is always spinning with ideas, so much so that I could not live without a planner, and I know many bloggers who would say the same thing. Gotta write that stuff down before my head gets too full and thoughts start escaping! Blogging is way harder than people think because, if you want to excel at it, you will need skills in photography, writing (especially grammar! Like, please stop confusing your/you’re, people. You’re better than that.), business, networking, social media and so much more. I know firsthand that it can be overwhelming and I debated closing my account at the beginning, because no hobby should be this much work. I’m just not passionate enough, I told myself. But I was lying. Blogging is what I was born to do. And I haven’t even told you the best part! Bloggers (for the most part) are not all in competition with each other – they are so so supportive! Bloggers help each other out and broadcast opportunities and follow back and will definitely let you know if you’re doing a super awesome job. No cute detail goes unnoticed. So, yes, my head is spinning with new post ideas and blogging opportunities 24/7 and it takes up about 200% of my free time, but I found my passion and you know what they say (cheesy quote alert) – when you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
With the rates of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) continuing to surge across the United States, protecting yourself and your family from the dangerous effects of sun exposure has never been more important. A whopping 80 percent of the 1,700 sunscreen products that the Environmental Working Group reviewed this year contain harmful ingredients or offer inadequate protection against dangerous ultraviolet radiation. So before you hit the beach or go outside this summer, know what is in your sunscreen. …80 percent of the 1,700 sunscreen products that the Environmental Working Group reviewed this year contain harmful ingredients… It’s a scary reality that the vast majority of sunscreens stocked on American store shelves aren’t as safe as most of us think they are. Many simply do not provide enough UVA protection and some contain potentially hazardous chemicals such as oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor, or retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A linked to skin damage. I have become totally addicted to using the free app that the Environmental Working Group created called Skin Deep. It lets me see the safety scores of the sunscreen products that I use on myself and my family. The scores are ranked from 1 to 10, 1 being the safest product and 10 being the most harmful. I have become totally addicted to using the free app that the Environmental Working Group created called Skin Deep. I am so glad to be a consultant with Beautycounter; it is our mission to get safe products in the hands of everyone. Beautycounter’s All Over Protect sunscreen scores a 1 on the Skin Deep app, it may be something to consider for you and your family…I know I love it! Remember not all sunscreens are created equal.

My pimples are only skin deep. My skin won’t stop me because I’m a smart, beautiful, bride-to-be who is a partner in a company. …phew…that statement was harder to write than you would imagine. I think that I re-wrote it six times. Each time with the voice in my head saying, “people know you have bad skin, you’re pretty, but don’t be so bold as to call yourself beautiful.” Ouch. That’s a huge ding in the old armor. Confession: I’m on medicine that eats my estrogen and my hormones take some serious attention to keep in line, thus causing my face to sometimes reflect what I so lovingly refer to as “my pimple beard.” It doesn’t happen often, but when it does…it’s horrendous. I have porcelain white skin – thanks to my Polish, Irish, English, & Swiss heritages – but that just means that it’s a blank canvas for breakouts. Going without makeup is reserved for Saturdays, after work, and on the rare occasion that my face is in great shape. Like Sara Brennan admitted in her post, I, too, am a picker, which doesn’t help. Stress only makes it worse and I truthfully don’t remember a time where I wasn’t stressed…grad school, starting a business, planning a wedding…oh my! I have a regiment that I follow, but any change in meds can throw it off and it’s mortifying. Skin is something that rocks my confidence and I really wish that I would finally “grow out” of this phase in life.
