Becoming an entrepreneur can be exhilarating and freeing, but also very scary and daunting. After being in the corporate world for 15 years, I decided that real estate was where I could make good money. I prepared myself with a 5 year plan, sold a house that I had a lot of cash invested in, and bought a very small and practical condo. It was just enough for me and my dog. Several years passed and I built a strong business and I was living off my real estate income. I was not shopping at Nieman Marcus anymore, but I was not getting groceries from Walmart anymore like I did in the beginning of my real estate career. Life was good and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I was not prepared for what happened when the real estate market crashed in 2008. I literally had no income for a year and I was in panic mode. I was losing all my savings, my dignity, and myself. Those were very dark and dim days and I was suffering from depression and anxiety. A friend of mine reached out to me and told me about a new start up company that sold couture costume jewelry. The jewelry was sold online and via in-home trunk shows. It was a direct selling company and all I could think of was that it was a scam and it was icky. “No way I am going to get involved, I have a college degree and I am not going to be a part of this shady business”. After several conversations with my friend who had signed up to be a Stylist, I decided I had nothing to lose. I loved the jewelry, the price point, and I saw potential to make a significant amount of money. I jumped in not knowing where to start but I worked my business the best I knew how. Along the way I made many mistakes, but also had a lot of successes. I was learning the retail business, how to recruit, motivate others and help people achieve their dreams. Direct selling is not for everyone, it sometimes looks easier than it is. It is a career, you have to work as if you are working a job. The magic to the business is loving the product you are selling and being passionate about it. You have to work your business a little everyday, I usually gage 10-15 hours a week. You need to be consistent, never give up, set personal/business goals, mentor your team, and most of all lead by example. The rewards in direct selling are over the top! You have flexibility, you dictate how much you want to earn, you make wonderful friends along the way, and you will grow as an entrepreneur. After 5 years, I grew a team of over 400 stylists and sold over a million dollars in accessories. It was a very rewarding experience and I recommend this business to anyone. You do not have to be a great sales person, so do not be afraid. When you go to a department store and need to buy a camera, the salesperson is there to give you the features of the camera. Let’s say you decide to buy it, you are so pleased and you go back days later to tell the salesperson that you are happy with your new camera. What if the salesperson asked you if you wanted to sell a camera just like the one you have to your friends. Would you want to do that? You loved the camera and you could make money for letting them know how great the camera is and it’s features. This is what direct selling is and I can tell you that it was one of the best choices I made for myself. I am in control of my destiny now and you can too.

If my 14 year old wouldn’t kill me, I would take a picture to show you what is happening right now in our house. But first, let’s rewind just a bit… Yesterday when I picked my daughter up from school she was coughing, her nose was running, and she had a sore throat. So we stopped at the store on the way home to pick up the essentials.. medicine, kleenexes, cough drops, and juice. By the time I picked my husband up from work our daughter had fallen asleep on the couch with one of our cats. (We were in a car accident a few weeks ago and his vehicle is in the shop getting fixed, which means we’re down to one vehicle… Luckily I’ve been able to drop my husband off at work and pick him up every day this week because I work at home). Our daughter woke up to eat dinner (which she was upset about because it was one of her favorites and she couldn’t taste it), watch Modern Family on the DVR, and then fell asleep again on the couch after another dose of medicine. I told my husband that I probably wasn’t going to send her to school today, I don’t appreciate when other parents send their kids to school when they’re sick, so I wasn’t about to do the same with mine. This morning, after taking my husband to work, our daughter was still sleeping, which is uncommon for her. She’s usually up before my husband even leaves for work, and she’s up by 7am even on the weekends. So I made the decision just let her sleep in and miss school. I grabbed my computer and headed into my room to start working for the day. Around 7:45 I heard her coughing and waking up and before I knew it, she had crawled into bed with me. Yes, at 14, she still wants to get into bed with me and watch TV when she’s sick, I will never complain about that! So right now, I’m laying in my bed with my computer, getting things ready to celebrate my Two Year Anniversary with Thirty-One with my customers in my VIP Customer Group. My daughter is laying next to me watching last night’s American Idol with kleenexes and cough drops sitting beside her on the night stand, and all five animals are laying in the bed with us. (Isn’t it funny how animals can sense when someone isn’t feeling well?) THIS is why I LOVE my job. When my husband’s vehicle went into the shop we didn’t have to freak out about how he was going to get to work. We didn’t have to get a rental. We didn’t have to worry last night about who was going to have to miss work if our daughter was too sick to go to school today. We didn’t have to send her to school just so that one of us didn’t have to miss work to be home with her. I’m still working today and I’ll still celebrate with my VIP Customers. I’ll still be bringing in income while laying in bed and taking care of my daughter. I don’t think I realized it when I was younger, but I was VERY blessed to have a stay at home mother. My brother and I never had to worry if someone was going to be there for us if we got sick at school and needed picked up. We never had to worry if our parents were going to be late picking us up somewhere because work ran late. We got to spend summers at home with our mom instead of at day care or a babysitters. I’m very grateful to be able to do the same for our daughter. I know that staying home with her while she’s sick isn’t glamorous, but I do know that when she’s older, she’ll be look back and remember that I was always there.

I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but sometime in the past few months I realized something… I’m a small business owner! It’s true! I am! I’m sure many people in Direct Sales go through this odd transformation. Most people start Direct Sales companies as a hobby, a way to make an extra $100/month, or maybe just to get a discount on some of their favorite products. I definitely did not purchase my Thirty-One Enrollment Kit with the intention of it turning into a business. I just wanted the best deal in the catalog! A little over a year after joining Thirty-One and I have a team of 29 amazing women that I get to celebrate, encourage, reward, train, and lead! How awesome is that!?! While I don’t write their paychecks, I like to think that I do have an influence in them. (And I’m ALWAYS up for helping one of them get a raise!) I’m sure that most people in direct sales have gone through that stage where they’ve had someone say that what they do isn’t a “real job”. Yep, you’re right! I LOVE what I do! I love that I get to hold Facebook Parties while I’m sitting in the living room with Devon watching American Idol. I love that I know that I never have to miss one of her soccer games because of “work”. I get PAID to PARTY! Whatttt?!?! Oh, and have you heard that nonsense that you can’t make any money with Direct Sales. That one REALLY makes me giggle. Did you know that over 80% of women who make over $100,000/year do so in Direct Sales??? WOW!!! Ok, I’m getting sidetracked (what’s new?). A few weeks ago or even a month ago it really hit me that I’m a small business owner. I started noticing that I felt I needed to be glued to my phone in case a customer, hostess or team member needed something. What if there was a purse emergency!?! It wasn’t until Dave, Devon and I were at volleyball game watching some of Devon’s friends play when I realized that I needed to set “Business Hours”. We were at the game and I was cheering the girls on when I realized that I was the only person in the gym cheering. I looked around and saw EVERYONE else on their phones! I made a promise then to myself that when Devon’s soccer games start up I wouldn’t be one of those parents. I wouldn’t miss one of her goals because I was too busy checking my Facebook messages to see what pattern someone wanted their new purse in. I wasn’t going to let “work” get in the way of my family. That’s why most women do Direct Sales… to be able to enjoy their families while also earning an income. Setting Business Hours was something that I struggled with. To be completely honest, a year ago I would have thought it was narcissistic for someone who “sold purses” to have business hours. Boy was I wrong. Setting business hours should be a MUST for those in Direct Sales. It elevates that constant feeling of having to be available for everyone. Trust me, there is no such thing as a purse emergency. Business hours allow me to ENJOY my family time more without having to constantly check my phone. It has even made me more productive during the times I designate for my business. Currently, my business hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 2pm. I have parties on week nights and I DO NOT work on the weekends. I’m sure my hours will change, especially when summer comes and Devon is out of school. For now I tell my team and my customers that if they contact me after business hours that they shouldn’t expect an answer until my next set of business hours. Will there be times where I do some work outside of my business hours? Of course, but it will be something planned, not something that interrupts family time. I was nervous that everyone would think I was being rude, but have experienced nothing but support of my business hours, my team and customers understand that it’s so I can enjoy my family! If you’re in Direct Sales or work from home, do you have your own business hours set? How did you announce your business hours to your team and customers?
