I choose to stay active and eat healthy because that is what makes me feel good. It is NOT easy. It is very hard to get into this lifestyle, but trust me….once you are in it, you won’t look back. Now, I haven’t ALWAYS been active and a healthy eater. I have 3 kids, so you can imagine how many times I had to restart my “Healthy Lifestyle”. Everyone is different, so what works for my body, may not work for yours. But, for my body, jogging helps me A LOT!! Like I said, I have 3 kids. If I don’t jog in the morning (and it HAS to be in the morning – it helps me start my day off right), then I am not normal. haha… Weird, I know. Just missing a day of jogging turns me into another person. I put on my choice of music, which is dance, techno, hip hop — yea, I am one of those people you see jogging, with the music blasting in their earbuds. Hey! It works for ME. I have to feel energized and that type of music just gets me going! Working out, gives me energy to chase around my 10 month old and wrestle with my 3 year old and run my 9 year old to swim practice and girl scouts. Now, I am not one of those marathon joggers. I jog slow and stop a lot. I also belong to the UFC Gym and do kickboxing and strength training. I think I like that a lot because it makes me feel like I belong to a team. Everyone encourages you and makes you feel good. They don’t try and be perfect or sugar coat crap. They are all there for one reason…to work out! You just go in, get your shit done, chit chat for a bit, and leave. Boom. Done. If I feel like people watching, I will go to the gym and do some cardio while watching other people that are supposed to be working out, chatting, or flirting with people. It is actually quite entertaining! You should try it some time! So, I work out for me! I don’t do it to impress anyone (other than my hubby) but ME!! It makes ME feel good, gives ME energy, and keeps ME in a good mood — and a little wine keeps me in an even better mood!

Until recently, I vowed that I would have an exclusive relationship with the workout system T25 for the rest of my life. Although I still have very strong feelings for the very effective 10 week DVD workout program, our relationship is starting to get a little “complicated” since my family and I made the decision to join the YMCA. I’ll be honest, in the beginning, I joined the Y because it offered 2 hours of childcare per day included in the price of the membership (don’t judge). I thought would use that two hours of childcare for my son to meet and play with some new friends while allowing me workout a couple days each week AND on the days I chose not to workout, I could use that “kid-free” time to sit in the lounge and get some WIRL Project work done. I know, I know, probably not the BEST reason to “join” the gym in the first place, but for some reason I felt in my gut that it was the right decision. Plus, my husband wanted to have a place to play some basketball and shoot around before and after his workouts. It seemed like a win-win. So, it came to our first day at the Y and I was nervous. I was nervous to drop my son off at the childcare (which he now LOVES) and I was nervous about taking a “group exercise” class. I hadn’t done any working out in a group setting since my college volleyball days…it had been a while and I wasn’t sure how I’d measure up. I dropped my son off and that went well, then I walked into the “Athletic Conditioning” class and saw that a lot of people already knew each other. I felt like the “new kid” at school because I didn’t know anyone! Anyway, the workout began and it was hard as hell. OMG, honestly it was kicking my ass. Then, to my left, these group of women, who I’d saw when I initially walked in, started cheering me on. They’d say, You got this, girl! or Keep going! Don’t give up! You’re doing great! and these few, out-of-breath words meant a lot to me. As I said before, I’d done “at-home” workouts by myself for years and I LOVED them! But, at this class at the Y, I had a bunch of people cheering me on and encouraging me to be better; it was awesome! This sort of thing does not happen when you’re in your living room doing the DVD all by yourself. Then, to my left, these group of women, who I’d saw when I initially walked in, started cheering me on. They’d say, You got this, girl! or Keep going! Don’t give up! You’re doing great! and these few, out-of-breath words meant a lot to me. At that moment, I was hooked. I knew it was the right decision to join the Y (see I told you), but it wasn’t until that little “boost” did I fully understand how this gym membership could fill a void in my life. Now, I go to class and socialize and workout with my gym buddies and I love it! I realized this was a big missing piece for me, especially after becoming a stay-at-home mom, and I also realized that it didn’t hurt to be around a bunch of motivated, awesome people on a regular basis! So, for me, working out has always been about being strong, healthy, fit, and toned. I usually did it because I wanted to look good or to feel better about myself, and don’t get me wrong, those are still several of the reasons I do workout, but now, I really enjoy that little bit of competitiveness that I feel in the group class setting, even though there is never a “winner” or “loser”, the extra people around me keep me accountable, motivated, and offer words of encouragement when I really need them. I also like the fact that I can pay it forward and do that for someone else as well. So, for me, the REAL reason I workout now is because I want to feel strong, in a physical way, but also in the fact that I want to be a part of something fun and social, that pushes me to be better than I currently am. There are not many places you can go in this day and age where people purposefully build you up and don’t try to bring you down; for me the gym is a positive place. I want to feel strong internally and translate that into confidence because the results I seek now are different than just the “body” I used to be aiming for (if that makes sense). My results aren’t really measured by numbers on the scale as much anymore (although those numbers still matter a lot to me), but more by the strength I feel when I pick up and play with my son or the feeling I get when I’m around such awesome like-minded people who are all trying to better themselves too; that’s the REAL reason I workout these days, and I LOVE it!

So, what the hell is the “Dad Bod”? It’s been trending on social media and showing up on the news lately and I’m not sure what to think of it. I guess this, “Dad Bod” has always been around…it’s the guy who is over the age of 25 and has a healthy balance of hitting the bars and hitting the gym. He wants to look good for the ladies his lady, but loves his beer just as much as he enjoys his “high protein/low carb” meal to come in the form of chicken wings. Underneath the belly hair and beer gut you’ll find a nice set of strong abs, but this is not for all to know – only a select few will ever get the privilege to know that this man is “ripped”. And lastly, somehow, this guy is always popular; he had loads of friends and enjoys his social time. Probably because he’s not spending every last waking second at the gym, right? Well, call me crazy, but women seem to LOVE the Dad Bod! Oddly enough, the super fit guys, like the ones in Magic Mike, come across as self-centered and insecure; why do they feel the need to be spending SO much time at the gym? I mean yeah, sex sells, but at the end of the day, I’d rather be next to a smart, intelligent, funny, empathetic, chubby guy over some muscle head who is only concerned with himself. For me personally, I was lucky enough to marry a rare breed of man…one who is super concerned with being fit, but also holds the traits of the man who typically has the “Dad Bod”. Wow, I feel special! …at the end of the day, I’d rather be next a smart, intelligent, funny, empathetic, chubby guy over some muscle head who is only concerned with himself. So, anyway, I said I was not sure what to think of this whole Dad Bod thing and here’s why…why is it called the “Dad” bod? And what about the “Mom Bod”? Women bear the child and deal with ALL KINDS of bodily changes including stretch marks, fat in extra places, saggy boobs, a stretched uterus, and the urge to pee when we laugh, sneeze or jump…but yet, “sexy” for a woman is still the extremely slim, barely clothed, ripped, long haired woman – who does not represent the “mom” community the least bit! If a mom chooses to only workout periodically (or never), she is considered chunky, think, or even frumpy! I know, a lot of guys are all-about-that-base, but it’s not really what is projected, especially on TV, magazine covers, and social media. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are full of selfies, especially from women, but how many “takes” and “edit’s” did it take for you to publish the one you did? LOTS! I mean, the standard is set pretty HIGH (see right). To get the perfect selfie, you have to make sure you have the right light, angle, makeup, and that you crop out that extra arm fat, right? Or you have to exhale so hard and hold your breath to make your stomach look thin that you literally pass out mid selfie! Sheesh, it takes a lot of effort for a woman, let alone a MOM, to look “good”. But, not the man who owns the “Dad Bod”…he’s hairy, fluffy, and fabulous with very little effort? WTF? It’s just not fair! I have nothing against the “Dad Bod”, I actually agree with the fact that sexy can be something other than tanned, toned, and perfect! So, to wrap this up, I’ll finish by saying I have nothing against the “Dad Bod”, I actually agree with the fact that sexy can be something other than tanned, toned, and perfect. However, we need to shift this thinking towards females as well! Let’s empower the “Mom Bod”! So what IS the “Mom Bod”? It’s not perfect – that’s basically it. I would say the “Mom Bod” could be defined as a woman over 25 (or who’s had a baby) who tries her best to fit working out into her busy schedule, but also enjoys a grande Carmel Ribbon Crunch Frappaccino from Starbucks every now and then (or everyday) along with a cupcake, cookie and/or piece of pizza (sometimes). The woman who wears the “Mom Bod” is strong mentally, but also physically from picking up her children hundreds of times per day. She’s not fat, but she’s not a toothpick either – she’s got muscle, but it’s not bulging. She also has a lot of friends, but may not have the time to socialize with them as often as she’d like and her close friends and family see her inner AND outer beauty. I challenge us women, in true WIRL style, to start posting the “real” you online and on social media; no filters, cropped pictures, or retakes – just the raw, real you! Show us what it’s really like. I’m sure we all know a woman who may be insecure in her “Mom Bod”, we all are! I challenge us women, in true WIRL style, to start posting the “real” you online and on social media; no filters, cropped pictures, or retakes – just the raw, real you! Show us what it’s really like. And, I’ll bet we’ll find that men LOVE it…just as much, if not more, than women love the “Dad Bod”. What do you think? I’d love to see your thoughts in the comment box below. (Watch this video below for more of a dialogue of this “Dad Bod” vs “Mom Bod” conversation.)

I recently started an exercise routine where I’m weight training and doing some walking too, as I am aware how important it is to have strong bones and muscles as we age. Being in my 50’s and just starting out, I am surprised at the fact that I’m actually enjoying doing it!! I’ve never been much for going to the gym, but once again if you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you just might find that it’s something both fun and rewarding! Any other ideas to get stronger?? I was thinking of riding my bike a bit more once the weather improves. Let me know your thoughts or suggestions
