Quiet… I sit here alone enjoying this moment. Ahh another day goes by, five sweet little blessings tucked into their beds, but this mother still has much to do before I lay down to rest. Time to prepare, time to pray, and time to reflect. A while ago, I came across a quote that read: This quote really touched my heart and opened my eyes to a lot of things. Being a wife, stay-at-home homeschooling mother and Director with Thirty-One Gifts I wear many hats. From the moment I get up, I am nonstop being pulled in one direction or another. It’s not always easy and I will let you in on a little secret, some days I feel like the biggest failure and not worthy to be in the roles I hold. Then, I realize I am exactly where I am suppose to be, blessed with exactly the children I am suppose to have, and doing exactly what God has called me to do. He alone has instilled talents and gifts in each of us… what we chose to do with them is up to us. I chose to use every bit of them for His honor and glory. To reach deep within myself and give my all, in all I do, so at the end of my life I can look back and say I used every bit of talent He blessed me with. I hear often words from strangers and even friends, “Boy, do you have your hands full!” Or “Wow, you must be super woman!”. I am far from being super woman, or mom for that matter, I struggle just like the rest. My hands are full, but not in the way most would think. My hands are full when I have a child close by to hug, a little hand to hold, and a child in my arms dancing and singing around the kitchen, just to name a few. This is my life’s greatest joy and accomplishment. Even though the moments of silence are refreshing, I look forward to tomorrow when I can continue to use my talents with God’s help until every ounce of it is used up. Loving my journey!

If my 14 year old wouldn’t kill me, I would take a picture to show you what is happening right now in our house. But first, let’s rewind just a bit… Yesterday when I picked my daughter up from school she was coughing, her nose was running, and she had a sore throat. So we stopped at the store on the way home to pick up the essentials.. medicine, kleenexes, cough drops, and juice. By the time I picked my husband up from work our daughter had fallen asleep on the couch with one of our cats. (We were in a car accident a few weeks ago and his vehicle is in the shop getting fixed, which means we’re down to one vehicle… Luckily I’ve been able to drop my husband off at work and pick him up every day this week because I work at home). Our daughter woke up to eat dinner (which she was upset about because it was one of her favorites and she couldn’t taste it), watch Modern Family on the DVR, and then fell asleep again on the couch after another dose of medicine. I told my husband that I probably wasn’t going to send her to school today, I don’t appreciate when other parents send their kids to school when they’re sick, so I wasn’t about to do the same with mine. This morning, after taking my husband to work, our daughter was still sleeping, which is uncommon for her. She’s usually up before my husband even leaves for work, and she’s up by 7am even on the weekends. So I made the decision just let her sleep in and miss school. I grabbed my computer and headed into my room to start working for the day. Around 7:45 I heard her coughing and waking up and before I knew it, she had crawled into bed with me. Yes, at 14, she still wants to get into bed with me and watch TV when she’s sick, I will never complain about that! So right now, I’m laying in my bed with my computer, getting things ready to celebrate my Two Year Anniversary with Thirty-One with my customers in my VIP Customer Group. My daughter is laying next to me watching last night’s American Idol with kleenexes and cough drops sitting beside her on the night stand, and all five animals are laying in the bed with us. (Isn’t it funny how animals can sense when someone isn’t feeling well?) THIS is why I LOVE my job. When my husband’s vehicle went into the shop we didn’t have to freak out about how he was going to get to work. We didn’t have to get a rental. We didn’t have to worry last night about who was going to have to miss work if our daughter was too sick to go to school today. We didn’t have to send her to school just so that one of us didn’t have to miss work to be home with her. I’m still working today and I’ll still celebrate with my VIP Customers. I’ll still be bringing in income while laying in bed and taking care of my daughter. I don’t think I realized it when I was younger, but I was VERY blessed to have a stay at home mother. My brother and I never had to worry if someone was going to be there for us if we got sick at school and needed picked up. We never had to worry if our parents were going to be late picking us up somewhere because work ran late. We got to spend summers at home with our mom instead of at day care or a babysitters. I’m very grateful to be able to do the same for our daughter. I know that staying home with her while she’s sick isn’t glamorous, but I do know that when she’s older, she’ll be look back and remember that I was always there.

I’m an Independent Director with Thirty-One Gifts, which means that I get paid to party! I absolutely love it, but I do have my fair share of embarrassing things that have happened at my parties. I’m the first to admit that I’ll never have a “perfect party”. I get excited when I present which leads to me talking too fast and stumbling on my words. I make funny faces without realizing it, and I often bump into my display. I can’t help it, it’s just how I am and I’ve learned to embrace those sides of me. I’m prepared for all those to happen at every party, and it’s ok, I’m human! Direct Sellers aren’t perfect, that would just be boring! Over the summer (which I am really missing right now!) a friend was hosting a Thirty-One party with me. There were about ten women in the hostess’s living room and we were having a great time. I knew most of the women that were at the party, so that always adds to the fun. We were laughing, sharing stories, and talking about how we would use all of the products that I was sharing when it happened… I bent down to pick up our Large Utility Tote so I could talk about it and pass it around to the guests when all of a sudden the underwire from my bra broke through the fabric, shot out of my shirt, and hit me in the eye. I kid you not! It happened so fast I had a hard time understanding what HAD happened. As soon as I realized what just hit me, I also remembered that I was standing in the middle of a living room with 10 sets of eyes staring at me waiting to see my reaction. What’s a girl to do!?! I started laughing uncontrollably, picked up my underwire and threw it into my bag. Then I told the ladies at the party: You all have to add at least one more product to your order now, so I can go out and buy some new bras! The rest of the party was a blast, and I even had someone join my Thirty-One team BECAUSE of the bra incident! When I got home from the party I told my 14 year old daughter what had happened as well as my husband. Of course my husband had no idea how something like that could even happen, but my daughter was laughing so hard that she had tears running down her face. Now when I come home from parties she asks me if we need to go bra shopping! Do you have any embarrassing bra stories?

I have always been very goal oriented. I LOVE setting goals and reaching them. One thing that we often talk about in Thirty-One is setting goals. Those big, scary goals. You know the ones I’m talking about, the goals that you have in the back of your mind but make you incredibly nervous to write down or say aloud. I’m very lucky to have a group of other Directors that I chat with daily. Last year when I was working on my goals for my one year anniversary with Thirty-One they asked me what I would like to have by then. I told them “I’d like to be a team of 20, but that goal scares me!” They all replied “well, then that’s your goal. If it doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough” So that was that, I had a goal to become a team of 20 by my one year anniversary. I wrote it down on my Goal Board and I looked at it every day… and then I reached my goal. By having your goals written down and somewhere where you see them every day, you’re holding yourself accountable. You don’t want to look at those goals every day and say “ugh, I’m not going to be able to reach them”, you want to look at them with determination and tell yourself “I’m working my booty off to reach those goals” I have several stages of goals. Currently on my goal board I have my goals by National Conference, which is less than two weeks away: See where I crossed out $12,500 and changed it to $15,000? That is an amazing feeling! When you reach your goal ahead of schedule so you have to up your goal. I LOVED crossing that out and challenging myself even more! My goals are displayed on my Thirty-One Hang Up Home Organizer right next to my desk in my office, along with some of my favorite celebratory postcards. Keeping words of encouragement next to your goals is a great way to believe in yourself and in your goals. What are some of your goals? They can be for your family, your home, your business… anything!

I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but sometime in the past few months I realized something… I’m a small business owner! It’s true! I am! I’m sure many people in Direct Sales go through this odd transformation. Most people start Direct Sales companies as a hobby, a way to make an extra $100/month, or maybe just to get a discount on some of their favorite products. I definitely did not purchase my Thirty-One Enrollment Kit with the intention of it turning into a business. I just wanted the best deal in the catalog! A little over a year after joining Thirty-One and I have a team of 29 amazing women that I get to celebrate, encourage, reward, train, and lead! How awesome is that!?! While I don’t write their paychecks, I like to think that I do have an influence in them. (And I’m ALWAYS up for helping one of them get a raise!) I’m sure that most people in direct sales have gone through that stage where they’ve had someone say that what they do isn’t a “real job”. Yep, you’re right! I LOVE what I do! I love that I get to hold Facebook Parties while I’m sitting in the living room with Devon watching American Idol. I love that I know that I never have to miss one of her soccer games because of “work”. I get PAID to PARTY! Whatttt?!?! Oh, and have you heard that nonsense that you can’t make any money with Direct Sales. That one REALLY makes me giggle. Did you know that over 80% of women who make over $100,000/year do so in Direct Sales??? WOW!!! Ok, I’m getting sidetracked (what’s new?). A few weeks ago or even a month ago it really hit me that I’m a small business owner. I started noticing that I felt I needed to be glued to my phone in case a customer, hostess or team member needed something. What if there was a purse emergency!?! It wasn’t until Dave, Devon and I were at volleyball game watching some of Devon’s friends play when I realized that I needed to set “Business Hours”. We were at the game and I was cheering the girls on when I realized that I was the only person in the gym cheering. I looked around and saw EVERYONE else on their phones! I made a promise then to myself that when Devon’s soccer games start up I wouldn’t be one of those parents. I wouldn’t miss one of her goals because I was too busy checking my Facebook messages to see what pattern someone wanted their new purse in. I wasn’t going to let “work” get in the way of my family. That’s why most women do Direct Sales… to be able to enjoy their families while also earning an income. Setting Business Hours was something that I struggled with. To be completely honest, a year ago I would have thought it was narcissistic for someone who “sold purses” to have business hours. Boy was I wrong. Setting business hours should be a MUST for those in Direct Sales. It elevates that constant feeling of having to be available for everyone. Trust me, there is no such thing as a purse emergency. Business hours allow me to ENJOY my family time more without having to constantly check my phone. It has even made me more productive during the times I designate for my business. Currently, my business hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 2pm. I have parties on week nights and I DO NOT work on the weekends. I’m sure my hours will change, especially when summer comes and Devon is out of school. For now I tell my team and my customers that if they contact me after business hours that they shouldn’t expect an answer until my next set of business hours. Will there be times where I do some work outside of my business hours? Of course, but it will be something planned, not something that interrupts family time. I was nervous that everyone would think I was being rude, but have experienced nothing but support of my business hours, my team and customers understand that it’s so I can enjoy my family! If you’re in Direct Sales or work from home, do you have your own business hours set? How did you announce your business hours to your team and customers?

I am currently leading a Success Camp for 17 amazing women on my Executive Director’s downline. It’s a six week camp that directs the “campers” to specific training calls and forces them to step outside of their comfort zones. This past week the campers had to email me about where they would like to see themselves and their business in a year from now and two years from now. One of the campers emailed me saying that she had never thought that promoting to Director or above was achievable because she lives in a small town and didn’t know how her team would be able to all come up with their PV (personal volume – sales) needed to meet requirements. This is something that I hear from a lot of ladies in Direct Sales and one of the most common concerns for those thinking about joining Direct Sales. When I was replying to her email I had a huge AH HA moment and replied to her with this: I live in a town with a population of 6,500. That’s it, 6,500! In my very small town, I have been able to grow a team of some AMAZING women who are ROCKING their businesses! I was able to promote to Director in less than 8 months with the company. In my first full fiscal year with Thirty-One I was able to earn our Leadership Incentive Trip for my husband and I to Riviera Maya AND I was named to Thirty-One’s Leadership Council for being one of the Top 25 Team Builders in the entire company! All in a small town of 6,500 people. Some of the most successful people I know not only in Thirty-One, but in other Direct Sales companies, are from small towns. They didn’t let the size of their towns determine the size of their dreams. Success is not going to fall into your lap, and as much fun as my “job” really is, it does require some “work”. (It’s hard to call it a job and work when it really is so much fun) If you’re able to make yourself stand out, step outside of your comfort zone, and put some time and effort into your business, the size of your town will have no influence on your business.
