Caitlyn Jenner: What You’re REALLY Thinking…

Vanity Fair - Caitlyn Jenner

Yes, I said it, Caitlyn Jenner. The former Bruce Jenner has finally physically transitioned and let “her” out of the closet making her debut on Vanity Fair magazine earlier this week. Good for him! or her? Right? Or not? Hmmm? Let’s be real…we ALL have something to say about this…EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. US. Even if you say you “don’t care”, there must be a reason why you don’t care, because EVERYONE else seems to.

So, let’s “talk”. I’ve complied a few Caitlyn Jenner quotes from around the web. Let’s have this conversation in true WIRL fashion and talk about what we’re REALLY thinking. You may agree with comment 1, but strongly disagree with comment 5…let us know how you feel! Remember, no hate language is allowed according to WIRL Code, but, open, honest, genuine thoughts and feelings are, so be thoughtful of your words and WIRL from the heart.

Here’s how this will work:

Read the following 5 comments and watch the video clip that (light heartedly) sheds some light on this subject. Then, in the comment box below, tell us what you think. Pretend this platform is your best friend and say what you would say to that person. Got it? Okay, here we go!

Quote 1: “I’m sorry, it’s hard to be ‘proud’ of someone who has had the financial means to achieve unrealistic goals for girls like us”. – Lilith Gütler (TheGuardian.com)

Quote 2“This is something that has been part of her life — the secret of her life — and now she’s free. God bless you, honey. God bless you.” - Whoopie Goldberg (TheWrap.com)

Quote 3: “Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, business acumen, but now you’re a woman, and your looks are really the only thing we care about.” – Jon Stewart (Mic.com)

Quote 4: “Elective surgery isn’t courage or bravery…” - Kristin @KristinH1998 (Twitter.com)

Quote 5: “I’m totally supportive of people staying true to themselves and finding true happiness in whatever way they can. There are just more things that we as a nation and as a planet should be talking about and working on.” - Connor Cruise (Hollywoodlife.com)

Video Clip: Jon Stewart (Mic.com)

So, how do you feel? Which comment or segment of the video caught your attention? Let us know below! Be real and tell us how you REALLY feel…

  1. At first my gut reaction is disgust on how perverse this is. Its nauseating. But than I try to see him the way God sees him. God created us in His own image. Genesis 1:27 I can imagine the sadness the Father may feel for his child created.

HE! Had every right to make His choice. The Lord allows us to choose for ourselves. If we didn’t, whats the beauty in someone forced to love, The Lord wants us to choose to love to follow and to obey Him.

Jenner is a male will always be a male. “Woman, female, lady are nouns referring to adult human beings who are biologically female; that is, capable of bearing offspring.”

God is our creator and he knows how many hairs on your head. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

The Creator of the earth and all that dwells on it has a purpose for Jenner. I pray for Jenner to know understand we all belong to the creator. That our Savior Loves him.

It is not our place to be rude or judgmental. We need to be loving to those in our lives that do such things as Jenner has done. He is so far from the Father he is desperately seeking answers of happiness. Right now he is trapped in sin and sin separates us from the Lord. This is a sexual sin and its now his identity.

“Or do you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?” 1 Corinthians 6:9

The Bible, The Lord Jesus Christ is the answer. Always has been and always will be.
The Bible has been around longer than any other book. And whats written in it is scary if your not a believer. But its beautiful for those that Love our Lord!

If I’m wrong I waisted my life. If those that don’t believe are wrong they have waisted their eternity.

Jenner will be given an award when he meets the Creator.

  2. I loved Jon Stewart’s comments and also your point about the Arthur Ashe courage award. I had a professor who went through the surgery in the late 70s. Her teaches continue to impact me over 30 years later. What bothers me about this whole affair is that it smacks of a PR campaign to promote yet another reality show about the super rich. I’m also disappointed in how nasty people are in their reactions to other people’s comments. I have another blogging friend who posted a conservative article and was excoriated as a “hater.”

  3. I still have no idea who this person is, or why I should care. I don’t mean that in a cold sense, I just honestly had never heard of this person until they were on the cover of a magazine.

My thoughts are… There are thousands of news-worthy stories, and THIS is what is getting attention? This is more important than famine, drought, discrimination, etc.? It baffles me.

This is a story because it’s sensational. If this wasn’t someone already famous – NO MEDIA OUTLET WOULD HAVE TOUCHED IT. This person is not “special.” This person did what many others before her have done. Where is their recognition, then?

And as for everyone calling her a hero – no. Sorry, not sorry, just no. Heroes go into war. Heroes fight fires. Heroes wear badges and show up when you’ve just been mugged. Heroes risk their lives. Deciding to go ahead and live as a woman is not “heroic.” She has not saved anyone’s life, she has not protected our country’s freedom, she has not done anything I can consider heroic. Brave? Sure. This is brave. It’s courageous. But it is NOT heroic, and calling it such is demeaning of the men and women who have died for our freedom, for our safety, for our humanity.

  4. I understand some people may not agree with me and my thoughts.

I think this all makes for great publicity and we are all enthralled in this circus. Let’s face it we are tired of hearing about ISIS, the earthquakes killing people, and that a burglar just came into a prominent home and burned a family including the house keeper.

I believe everyone should be true to themselves, because “YOU” are the most important person to you. If Caitlin feels better that she has been able to come out from a man”s body that is okay with me. I just do not understand why she did not go about this quietly, she has made a ton of money and a spectacle out of this. There are lots of people cashing in on this story and I do not see it dying down anytime soon.

Has anyone thought about how awkward Kris and the Jenner twins must feel. It is hard enough finding out your parents are getting a divorce but to then find out your Husband and Dad really feels like a woman, that has to be painful.

Caitlin, I hope you go about your life and will be happy. Know that you are a roll model to the transgender community and you will do great things to inspire people to be courageous. However, you do not have to be the center of attention for more than “15 minutes”. We get it!

I’m sure this will end up being a very long comment, and I apologize ahead of time for that.

When you go to ESPN’s website and look up the award here is what is listed “About the Arthur Ashe Award” (and the about section was published back in 2012)

“The Ashe Award is one of the most prestigious in sports. Recipients reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost. The award is inspired by the life that Ashe lived, using his fame and stature to advocate for human rights, although, at the time, those positions may have been unpopular and were often controversial. From speaking out against apartheid in South Africa to revealing to the world his struggle with AIDS, Ashe never backed away from a difficult issue, even though doing so would have been easier. Winners of the Ashe Award strive to carry on Ashe’s legacy in their own lives – – inspired by those who do so each day.”

Past recipients include: Muhammad Ali, Dean Smith (Basketball Coach and Civil Rights Leader), Billie Jean King (Tennis Player and Advocate for Women’s Sports), Michael Sam (Professional Football Player who announced he was gay prior to the NFL draft).

There are several Social Media posts floating around stating that Noah Galloway (who lost most of his left leg and arm) was runner up to Jenner. However, nowhere does ESPN mention others who were “in the running” to receive the award. I think that it’s safe to say that regardless of who received the award, there will always be others who think that someone else should have received it over them. (And trust me, I’m a HUGE Noah Galloway fan – I cried like a baby every time he danced on Dancing with the Stars thinking about his courage and strength)

It’s easy to say that Jenner had the money to afford her procedures, but at the same time, look at some of the women who were BORN women that our country idolizes that have had some sort of procedure to enhance their beauty.

The attempted suicide rate for transgender people is 41%… 41%!!!! Think about that for a second! That is absolutely heartbreaking to me. Why is it 41%? Because most transgenders live their life in fear and shame. Caitlyn (along with others) is paving the way for acceptance for the transgender community. Will there be a time where all transgenders are accepted without judgement? Probably not, just like there is still racism, homophobia, and sexism.

I cannot even imagine what it’s like to wake up every day for 65 years and not feel comfortable in my body. To feel like something was wrong with me because I wanted to be someone different. I’m sure we all want to change at least one thing about our physical appearance, but can you imagine feeling like your entire life is a lie because your outer appearance does not match what you feel on the inside? It’s something that some people simply will not be able to understand because they do not feel that way.

Caitlyn deserves to be treated like the PERSON that she is and not treated like a freak show. Seeing some of the posts on social media about her is breaking my heart. People do not understand who they are hurting when they post hateful, disrespectful things on Facebook, twitter, and instagram. You really do not know if one of your best friends or family members is dealing with similar feelings and it’s ignorant posts that contribute to the 41% attempted suicide rate.

Great comment, Heather. I really appreciate this perspective. Also, thank you for sharing those statistics with us, it sure does bring this all into perspective, doesn’t it.

I’ll kick the conversation off by admitting that I did have to do a double take when I saw these photos of Caitlyn Jenner. She does look great, but then I start to think, of course she looks “good”, she just paid a ton of money to look that way!

But then, I am torn because although I do think it is courageous of her to take this path in life, especially when she’s (he’s?) been defined as one of the best athletes of all time. But, is this “coming out” deserving of the Arthur Ashe ESPY Award of Courage? I don’t know…I think by being true to himself, what Bruce/Caitlyn did is very courageous and brave in many ways, but I also think it was an obvious “choice” that he had the privilege of making, especially because he’s choosing to do it SO publicly. Others, who are forced to be courageous for reasons such as fighting cancer or those who elect to be in the front lines of our military, to me, those are choices that have far more significance in our society as a whole, so I agree with Quote #5 above.

Anyway, at the end of the day, I am interested to see what happens as this all unfolds, but I’m sure we’ll all be sick of it after a while. I think Caitlyn Jenner will be a great role model for many individuals who are going through a similar situation. Hopefully the transgender community experiences great support and that people will become more accepting than before. However, I think this whole publicity thing is a little “much”. But, I guess Caitlyn did live with the Kardashian family for quite some time…so you can’t really blame her if she is a “fame whore”.

Caitlyn is going to find out that being a woman is tough. She missed the years of menstrual cycles, awkward stages, giving birth, and all that jazz. So, just as Jon Stewart said, she’ll just have to deal with the shallow people who make comments about her looks – which really isn’t THAT bad when you put life into perspective.
